The Gift of the Holy Ghost

The Comforter, Sanctifier, and constant companion of the faithful

Key Scripture

John 14:26

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things."

The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead. He is a personage of spirit — distinct from the Father and the Son — whose mission is to testify of truth, comfort the afflicted, sanctify the soul, and guide the faithful.

The Gift vs. the Influence

All people may feel the influence of the Holy Ghost at various times in their lives. However, the gift of the Holy Ghost — the right to the constant companionship of the Spirit — is conferred by the laying on of hands by those holding the Melchizedek Priesthood, following baptism.

Roles of the Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost serves many roles: He is the Comforter (John 14:26), bringing peace in times of sorrow. He is the Sanctifier, cleansing and purifying the soul. He is the Revelator, bearing witness of truth and guiding us in our decisions. He is the Testifier, bearing witness of the Father and the Son.

Keeping the Spirit

We retain the companionship of the Holy Ghost through righteousness — through prayer, scripture study, obedience to the commandments, and keeping our covenants. When we sin, the Spirit withdraws. When we repent, He returns.
